Assignment Description
Theaimoftheassignmentistodevelopananalyticalunderstandingofperformanceandmanagementof differenttypesofnetworkedapplications.Theassignmentwillprovideanopportunitytounderstandnetwork performanceandmanagementissuesofnetworkedapplicationsusingstateofthearttools.Theseexercises provideanopportunitytodemonstrateanalyticalabilityofevaluatingdistributedsystemsperformance, QualityofServiceandservicemanagement.
Overview and General Instructions of Assignment
StudentsneedtoformagroupoftwointheirownlabclassandinformtutorabouttheirgroupduringWeek 7Lab.Eachgroupwillneedtocapturepacketsontheirhomenetworkandat CAMPUSwhileaccessingthefollowing websites.Onewebsiteisofanewschannelandtheotheroneisawebsiteforlivestreaming.Thestudentsare requiredtocapturepacketsofmultipleimagesfromthenewschannelwebsiteandcapturepacketsfromthe livestreamwebsitewhilestreamingfor10minutesonceatCAMPUSinagroupandthenontheirhomenetwork individually.Soattheendtherewillbesixtracefiles,threeforeachwebsite,twocapturedonMITnetwork andfouronstudents’homenetworks.

Part 1:
ThefirstpartofthereportshouldbeaboutgeneralstatisticsofallsixcapturesusingWiresharkthatmust include:
- Start time ofcapture
- Totalnumberofcapturedpacketsforeachprotocol
- TotalNumberoflostpackets
- IPaddressesoftheclientandserver
Part 2:
Thesecondpartofthereportmustincludescreenshotsofpacketcapture,screenshotsofdifferentstatistics fromWiresharkandcompleteanalysisofthosescreenshotsforbothwebsitesforallthreenetworks.Only screenshotsofthegraphsorotherstatisticswillnotgetanymarksasthosemustbeanalysedindetailto discussthequalityofserviceforaparticularapplication.Thestudentsarerequiredtoanalysethenetwork performancefortheassignedwebsitesconsideringfollowingaspects:
- Throughput
- Round TripTime
- PacketLoss
Whilecollectingstatisticspleasemakesure,youarelookingattherightflowasyourWiresharkfilemayhave packetsfromotherapplicationsandflowsaswell.Figure1onnextpageshowsthethroughputgraph generatedbyWiresharkandsourceanddestinationaddressesareclearlyshown.Youneedtocollectstatistics forflowswhicharefromservertoclient.

To see the Packet loss you need to enter the following filter in Wireshark:
tcp.analysis.lost_Segment
Part 3:
The third part of the report is about comparing the collected Wireshark statistics of the two different networkedapplicationsonthreedifferentnetworks.ThethroughputgraphsandTCPretransmissionstatistics forwebpagetransferandlivestreaming(providedinpart2)needtobecomparedwitheachotherandforall threenetworks.Thedifferencesoftheperformancetobeidentifiedandreasonsmustbeprovidedforsuch differences.
Part 4:
Studentsneedtodownload,install,useandcompareanotherfreenetworkperformancemeasurementtool from the Internet on their home computer. One possible option is Microsoft Message Analyzer from Thetoolshouldbeusedtoanalysethe networktrafficcapturedwhileaccessingoneofthenewswebsitesmentionedinTable1.Thechosentool shouldbecomparedwithWiresharkonthebasisoffollowingcriteria:
- Easeofaccessanduse:howeasyitistodownload,installandstartusing(anychangestobemade )ascomparedtoWireshark
- GUI:CompareatleastfourGUIfeaturesofthechosentoolwithWireshark
- Visualisationoftraffic:Aftercapturingpacketsbythechosentooltheeffectivenessofthe
