Practicum Experience – Week 1 Journal Entry

The Erickson’s and Role-Modeling Theories are some of the greatest nursing models that enable patients to become aware of their unique identity and gain personal respect of their needs while constructing an internal drive (Cormack & Reynolds, 2013). Acknowledging the fact that everyone has basic needs, which are supposed to be met, and if not met, they end up becoming distressed or even ill, can help both the patient and the practitioner come to an agreement on the best interventions to meets their health goals. Mending the patients’ needs through comfort, nutrition, and support will help in gaining affiliated individualization (Cormack & Reynolds, 2013). The main focus of this theory is to enhance collaboration between the nurse and the patient in setting mutual health directed goals and building on the strengths of the patient.

I decided to pick on Solution-focused therapy, as most of the patients I will be dealing with had been diagnosed with depressive disorder. Generally, this type of counseling therapy is mostly used with patients displaying symptoms of depression and has proven to be effective even with a fewer number of sessions (Reddy et al., 2015). Given that most of the therapies will take only 30 minutes to 1-hour sessions, solution-focused therapy will help to influence the population of the patients significantly within a very limited time frame. Specific questions are utilized in facilitating the patients’ thoughts, which helps the patient by increasing positive emotions and mental health outcome. Consequently, solution-focused therapy is also made up of co-construction focused on interactive communication between the nurse and the patient to help in enhancing patient-centered intervention during treatment (Sommers-Flanagan, 2013). The main challenge in taking care of patients with mental disorders in an acute setting is familiarization with the patient and the limited time available. Using specific questions aimed at a particular issue helps in saving time during assessment, and hence making it possible to come up with the most appropriate intervention for the management of the patient’s condition.

Assignment 2: Practicum – Week 8 Journal Entry

Goals

  1. Carry out a comprehensive interview session with new patients with a psychiatric disorder.
  2. Assessing the patient’s mental condition, making an appropriate diagnosis and finally coming up with the most effective intervention for management of the patient’s mental disorder.
  3. Familiarize myself with various nursing and counseling theories, which will be helpful during the therapy sessions.

Objectives

  1. Understanding various cultural and religious beliefs in addition to different socioeconomic status and their impact on psychotherapy.
  2. Appreciating different therapeutic approaches for different psychiatric disorders, among different patients.
  3. Enhancing the transitional care plan and incorporating patients together with their family within the psychotherapeutic approaches.

Practicum Timeline

Week 1 to Week 4: appreciating and familiarizing myself with various nursing theories and counseling theories. Utilize the nursing theories and counseling theories during my patient’s therapy session in the management of psychotic disorders. Correlating the appropriate theories to various therapy group sessions.

Week 5 and Week 6: Drawing more focus on posttraumatic stress disorder and how to manage its symptoms while utilizing the most appropriate nursing theories. Most patients in group therapy are normally diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder and addiction. The reason behind this is that most patients in psychiatry healthcare settings usually have polysubstance abuse as a means of coping with traumatic experiences or underlying mental complication.

Week 7 and Week 8: Acknowledging the difference between supportive care and interpersonal psychotherapy with patients in an acute psychiatry setting. Consequently, utilize the existential-humanistic therapy as an alternative to such patients and even those in group therapy sessions at outpatient psychiatry centers.

Week 9: During this week, I will put all my focus on adolescent unit of the hospital.

Week 10: During this week, I will focus on the elderly population. Most elderly patients suffering from a mental disorder are usually diagnosed with delirium which resulted from an underlying infection. This population is crucial due to their sensitivity to treatment and hence the nurse must be very keen when picking a specific course of the drug regimen for the management of the various psychiatric disorders.

Week 11: Assess and diagnose individuals with personality disorders based on both subjective and objective data. Develop the most effective psychotherapy for the management of such disorders among different patients.
